I'd like to give a talk about the USA. The USA is a short name for the United States of America or just America. First of all, it is the name of the country. And then "America" is the name of the two continents - North America and South America. These two continents, North and South America, form the part of the world called America.
America was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492 (fourteen -ninety-two). "In fourteen hundred and ninety-two Columbus sailed the ocean blue..." are the lyrics of the song. But the country - the USA - was formed later - in the 17 -18th centuries. George Washington played an important part in the country's development. He was the first American president. George Washington served as the president from 1789 to 1797. He became one of the "Fathers of the nation".
Nowadays there are fifty states in America. Its capital is Washington, D.C. Though it is not the largest city of America, Washington, D.C. is its political center where the White House and the Capitol are situated. These are the residence and the seat of the American president and the Congress.
