An east London borough has been voted the most miserable place to live in the UK, with residents rating their neighbours unfriendly and rude. Two other London boroughs featured in the bottom four, with Newham third worst and Brent placing fourth. But Barking and Dagenham, for the second year running, was named the least happy area in the country, according to the annual Rightmove survey. The company asked nearly 24, 000 people across the UK to rate their hometown, taking into account how safe they felt, the quality of local services and sense of community spirit. The London borough of Islington also performed badly, being rated the eleventh worst area in the UK. But this year's survey comes as a boost for Londoners who last year saw nine of the city's boroughs feature in the UK's ten most unhappiest places to live. Among the improvements are Hounslow and Harrow, which have both moved up the ratings.

Shooting at school is one of the most terrible crimes of our time. First of all, because a child commits it. The youngest shooter was only 11 years old according to the shooting data. The media in most cases finds more stereotypical reasons for such behaviour. For example, students had a bad relationship with their parents, were bullied, and weapons are too accessible. But experts say with one voice that this is too little to go shooting at people. Therefore, all the young shooters were necessarily diagnosed with a mental disorder. Most often psychopathy or schizophrenia. But it is definitely difficult to judge the reasons for how the disease reached its peak. The only way to prevent the number of victims is to monitor teenagers in a timely manner. Parents need to spend more time and observe the slightest changes in the child's life.

The Words

1. stereotypical |sterɪəˈtɪpɪkl| -

2. psychopathy |saɪˈkɒpəθɪ|  - психопатия

3. schizophrenia |ˌskɪtsə(ʊ)ˈfriːnɪə| -

4. monitor  |ˈmɒnɪtə| -  контролировать, следить

Unusual Subjects

Children are constantly bored in the classroom, and they do not want to attend traditional lessons such as chemistry, literature and mathematics. But in some countries, unusual subjects are introduced, the purpose of which is to increase children's interest in school. In other countries, these items are A    .

For example, computer science in Chinese schools has reached a new level. Previously, calligraphy was considered an unusual subject. Now the study of artificial intelligence is being introduced in big cities. Parents show concern about the benefits of this knowledge. Japanese culture is associated with B    . Perhaps because from an early age, children are instilled with this. They have a subject of admiring nature in their schools for this. This is both rest and contemplation of the beautiful. Happiness lessons introduced in Germany are aimed at making the child learn to be happy. During the year, each of them makes a project which he then presents to the whole class. The geographical location and history of Australia have given rise to another subject. In schools, C    . This is one of the physical education lessons to choose from. Many of us have seen American films of the 80s–90s in which many children present scientific projects. It really is. Each student is engaged in their D     in the USA in addition to their main studies.

We have recently introduced chess lessons in Russia. Chess develops memory, logic and is very useful at an early age. In some regions, the introduction of lessons is simply necessary. For example, in Yakutia there are lessons on reindeer husbandry. The harsh climate and the centuries-old cultural peculiarity of the area, E    , knowledge and experience should be passed on to F    .

1. The next generations.

Since ancient times, humans have loved  and cherished cats as their pets. Today more than 65 million cats reside in Russian homes, with an estimated three cats for every dog on the planet. Yet there is still a lot we don't know about our feline friends - including what they think of their owners.

After observing pet cats for several years, scientists have come to an intriguing conclusion: cats don't really understand people the way dogs do. They tend to feel it is they who own their masters, not vice versa. On the contrary, dogs perceive people as being very different from themselves. As soon as they see a human, they change their behaviour. The way a dog plays with a human is completely different from the way it plays with a dog. Cats are independent creatures and they can easily change their owner without changing their habits.

The Words:

6. vice versa /ˌvaɪs ˈvɜːsə/,

1. People’s contribution for the common good

2. Sharing your personal knowledge with others

3. Virtual reality for users with social interaction problems

4. New visual technologies at school

5. Virtual travel with useful navigation apps

6. Popularity of virtual tourism among teens

7. Comparing new technology to other forms of entertainment

8. When age does not matter

A. Google Maps and Google Earth are largely influencing tools for finding a place and searching information about a destination. Travelers who want a quality time through online travel can look in the google maps. They have powerful satellite system through which any destination can be seen and explored without going there. And last but not the least, the Guardian has an extensive travel service called the Guardian Travel. It offers a tool called ‘where have you been’.

B. Wikipedia is an online ‘crowdsourced’ encyclopedia that is constantly updated by thousands of volunteers from all over the world. It is a real-time look into the combined knowledge and experiences of billions of people. It is great for virtual tourism because you can quickly find almost any destination on Earth getting a sense for what each of these places is like. It does not matter how far, forbidding or obscure it is. You can find detailed descriptions and even photos.

C. Hundreds of new immersive experiences can transport students back through history or across our solar system with no magic bus required. Students can find themselves in the middle of the action where they can truly have first-person experiences. Virtual adventures can tap into the emotional core of human brains by tricking the mind into believing that users are actually teleported beyond the classroom into environments that fully engage their senses.

D. Virtual reality is more than just a fun classroom distraction. It is especially useful to help mobility-challenged students or those with special educational needs. According to a recent study, virtual reality is helping to accurately identify students with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Virtual ‘peer’ avatars are also used to help students on the autism spectrum learn important social skills such as eye contact and empathy.

E. We remember only ten percent of what we read, twenty percent of what we hear and thirty percent of what we both see and hear. But virtual reality can trick us into actually experiencing being chased by a dinosaur or feeling the emotional despair of life. The exhilaration of walking on the moon can cause an emotional response far deeper than any movie ever could. According to studies VR users have a higher emotional engagement than content provided with traditional video.

F. VirtualTourist was a travel website that existed from 1997 to 2017. It was a place where members could benefit from the first-hand knowledge, experience and advice of real travelers and locals. Then Trippy was founded. Some of the original forums from VirtualTourist were migrated to Trippy since a lot of the discussion was similar, focusing on travel questions and answers. Trippy is a home for the expert travel help and knowledge from former VT’ers.

G. Travel is a luxury sometimes taken for granted. But the older we get, the more difficult it can be to see the world. Luckily, virtual reality technology can change it. Unfortunately, elderly people are often overlooked when new technology enters the market, most likely due to their perceived inability to adopt new concepts. Though VR is rarely associated with the elderly, it can improve the quality of their life and make sure their dreams of travel are never ignored.

To travel or not to travel

I have always been thinking if the cost of travelling compensates the experience. Travelling is such a pleasure. Imagine going around the world experiencing all the different things that aren’t the same in your home country. Travelling gives you a great thing to put on applications because it shows that you are 32 _________ to travel and understand travelling for work. With travelling you could literally go anywhere in the world. You could never 33 _________ out of different places to visit because there are so many! 35 _________, travelling does have a disadvantage … the cost. Travelling not by yourself but with your family along is more expensive. But one way to save is going on cruises. They are the best for big families and if you want to see many places in a short period of time.
Another tip to 36 _____________ the cost of travelling is to follow other travellers’ advice. Some of them launch blogs, travel vlogs on YouTube Channel and post pictures on VK to keep a record of their journeys and let people back home know what they’re 37 _________ to as well as share their travel tips, costs and stories. This information can help other travellers budget for their trip and 38 ____________ an eye on their spendings. All in all I think travelling is worth taking!

Canada's original inhabitants are Indians. The very name Canada comes from a word meaning "village" in one of the local languages of Indian tribes. These tribes lived on the territory of modern Canada before the first Europeans arrived in the 11th century. They soon left, but more Europeans came in the 16th century and were made welcome because they brought manufactured goods and traded them for furs and other native products. However, the Europeans settled down and gradually displaced Indians over the next 250 years.

European settlers came in a series of waves. First were the French, followed by the English, and these two groups are considered the founding nations. France lost its part of territory to Britain in a war in 1760, but most of the French-speaking colonists remained. Their effort to preserve their language and culture is still an issue of Canadian history and has led in recent years to a movement to become independent from the rest of Canada.

Japan is an island nation in East Asia, located in the North Pacific Ocean off the coast of the Asian continent. Japan comprises the four main islands in addition to numerous smaller islands. Tokyo is the country's capital and largest city.

Mountains dominate Japan's landscape, covering 75 to 80 percent of the country. Historically, the mountains were barriers to transportation, limiting the economic development of isolated areas. However, with the development of tunnels, bridges, and air transportation in the modern era, the mountains are no longer an obstacle. The Japanese have long celebrated the beauty of their mountains in art and literature, and today many mountain areas are preserved in national parks.

Most of Japan's people live on plains and lowlands found mainly along the lower courses of the country's major rivers, on the lowest slopes of mountain ranges, and along the sea coast. This concentration of people makes Japan one of the world's most crowded countries.

The life of Indians is centered in the family. Extended families often live together, with two or more adult generations, or brothers, sharing a house. In much of the countryside, neighbouring houses share a wall, so from the street one sees a continuous wall pierced by doorways. In other areas, in the south for example, the main house will have a veranda on the street, with an open courtyard behind. As people get richer, they introduce improvements like tiled roofs to their houses. Most home activity is outside in the compound courtyard or on the verandas of the house.

Only in a few parts of India do people live on their farmland. The village is thus is a settlement area, or a set of settlement areas, surrounded by unbroken fields, with farms frequently made up of separated plots. A large village will have a primary school, and a small shop or two.

People have always told stories and legends to explain natural, but mysterious, occurrences such as the Northern Lights. The Vikings believed the Northern Lights were caused by the shining weapons of warriors. The Alaskan people thought the lights were the souls of salmon, deer and other animals. The Indians told the stories of giants living in the North and thought the lights were their torches.

The Northern Lights are actually caused by electrons from solar winds. They are attracted to the poles by the magnetic fields found there. They mix with gases in the atmosphere which causes the gases to glow.

High in the bamboo forests in the rainy mountains of China lives one of the world's rarest mammals: the giant panda. Only about 1,500 of these black-and-white relatives of bears survive in the wild.

Pandas eat almost nothing but bamboo shoots and leaves. Occasionally they eat other vegetation, fish, or small animals, but bamboo accounts for 99% of their diets. Pandas eat fast, they eat a lot, and they spend about 12 hours a day doing it. The reason is they digest only a fifth of what they eat. Overall, bamboo is not very nutritious. To stay healthy, they have to eat a lot.

The shape of teeth helps pandas crush bamboo shoots and leaves. To get the bamboo to their mouths, they hold it with their front paws. A panda should have at least two bamboo species where it leaves, or it will starve. A lack of bamboo threatens the limited panda population.

Our world is full of mysteries. There are stunning icebergs, roaring waterfalls, dashing jungles and many more. There are also singing sands in Kazakhstan. "Singing sands" is the name of big dunes that produce various sounds in dry weather.

The sounds can be heard several miles away and resemble sometimes organ music and sometimes the roars of an aircraft engine. According to local legends, such sounds are songs of desert ghosts and voices of fabulous beasts. Scientists however think that the grains of sands create those sounds as they rub against each other under a wind force.

Another miracle can be seen in the Antarctic. These are waves frozen in the air. Of course, it is not a real tsunami. Water cannot freeze instantly and in motion, even in the freezing temperatures. This ice begins to melt in summer and then freezes again - many years in a row forming natural sculptures for centuries.

Everyone loves hobbits. Ask anyone who's a fan of The Lord of the Rings to choose their favourite character and nine times out of ten it will be Samwise Gamgee. He's loyal, innocent and determined and without him Frodo couldn't have saved Middle Earth. He represents the Shire with all its comfort, safety and stability and these same attributes make Hobbit Holes special.

For those whose hearts belong forever in the Shire, there's a place they can go to, called Hobbiton. It's a movie set experience that's nestled in the heart of a small town in New Zealand.   The first human carrying flight technology was the hot air balloon. While unmanned balloons have been around in some form for thousands of years, the first flight with people on board was in 1782.

The large balloon on top is called an "envelope". It holds hot air created by a heat source known as a burner. The burner creates an open flame by burning a mix of propane and air. Hot air balloons are capable of floating because the hot air inside the envelope has a lower density than the colder air outside. The top of the balloon usually has a vent which allows the pilot to control the speed of ascent or descent

Passengers typically stand in a basket beneath the envelope. While most envelopes have a standard balloon shape, others are designed to look  like animals, cartoon characters and other fun objects.

Reading a light-emitting e-book before bed is bad for your health, according to a new US study. It warned that the use of the devices affected both sleep at night and alertness the following morning.

Researchers from Harvard Medical School's sleep medicine department put 12 healthy young adults through a two-week experiment, in which the participants would either read a light-emitting e-book for four hours before bedtime or a printed book. Study participants reading a light-emitting e-book took on average almost 10 minutes longer to fall asleep and said they were less sleepy an hour before bedtime than they were reading a paper book.

At the end of the day many people want to get away from their gadgets and have a rest from screens, so a printed book is perfect.

The Words

In 1900, the pace of life was significantly slower. Even on a domestic front, technology had changed our lives. In the early part of the century, gas and then electricity offered the opportunity to cook more quickly and efficiently. Cooking by microwave energy happened in the 1970s when people wanted food to be fast, efficient and convenient.

Logical – illogical (логичный – нелогичный); legible – illegible (разборчивый о почерке – неразборчивый).

Responsible – irresponsible (ответственный – безответственный); replaceable – irreplaceable (заменимый – незаменимый).

Polite – impolite (вежливый – невежливый); personal – impersonal (личный – безличный).

Unprofessional – nonprofessional (непрофессиональный); nonrecoverable – unrecoverable (не восстановляемые).

Arctic foxes live on the land and sea ice within the Arctic Circle. Winter in the Arctic is unlike winter in most parts of the world. From October to February, the sun never rises to shine warmth and light.

Luckily, these small foxes have some useful adaptations for living in the icy Arctic. Their long, fluffy tails act like a blanket, keeping the fox warm when it wraps the tail around its body to sleep. Their feet also have a layer of thick fur, like built-in snow boots. This helps muffle an arctic fox's footsteps, making it harder for prey to hear them. And their white coats make it difficult for predators such as wolves, polar bears, and golden eagles to spot them among the ice and snow.  When it's not trying to keep warm or avoid predators, an arctic fox is on the hunt for food. They prefer to eat small rodents called lemmings, but when times are tough, they'll eat whatever they can find: insects and berries.

An allergy is your immune system's reaction to certain plants, animals, foods, insect bites, or other things. Your immune system protects you from diseases by fighting germs like bacteria and viruses. But when you have allergies, it overreacts and tries to "fight" ordinary things like grass or certain foods. This causes the sneezing, itching, and other reactions that you get with allergies.

People may be born with a genetic tendency to have allergies, which means they are more likely to get them than other people are. Many allergies are passed to kids in the genes they get from their parents. You have a better chance of having allergies if your mom or dad or other people in your family have them.

Sometimes it's difficult to tell the difference between a cold and an allergy because the symptoms can be similar. If your cold symptoms last more than 2 weeks, you probably have an allergy and not a cold.

Football (or soccer as the game is called in some parts of the world) has a long history. Football in its current form arose in England in the middle of the 19th century. But alternative versions of the game existed much earlier and are a part of the football  history.

The first known examples of a team game involving a ball, which was made out of a rock, occurred in ancient cultures over 3,000 years ago in pre-Columbian America. In some ritual occasions, the ball would symbolize the sun and the captain of the losing team would be sacrificed to the gods. A unique feature of these ball game versions was a bouncing ball made of rubber - no other early culture had access to rubber.

The first known ball game which also involved kicking took place in China in the 3rd century BC. It was played with a round ball on an area of a square.

Even though you might think that global warming is not a burning issue, there are many dangers. The gradual heating of Earth's surface, oceans and atmosphere is something that is happening in real life in many places. The consequences and effects of global warming are measurable and visible. Scientists report that ice is melting in both polar ice caps  and mountain glaciers. Lakes around the world are warming rapidly changing animals' migration patterns and plants' blooming dates. The turn of the century has been fruitful for the rise of the fashion industry, especially the fast fashion segment. In the last 20 years it increased by about 60%, with people spending more money on cheaper garments. Brands cut their production cycles and turn to up-to-the-minute designs doing their best to expand and refresh their customers' wardrobes.

However, not everything is cream and peaches in the fashion industry. It requires using a lot of water and chemicals while emitting significant amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Clothing-factory workers work in unsafe workplace conditions and are often underpaid. Some consumers tend to overlook or tolerate these costs of fast fashion, while others expect brands to operate in a different manner. To meet other demands, companies do their best to change their production methods.

Task 1. Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

A polar bear walks along a rocky shore, looking for food. The bear would usually be on the sea ice hunting for seals, pouncing when the seal comes up to breathe. But the ice has started to melt  earlier and reform later than it was in the past. Without the sea ice, the polar bear must scavenge for other, less nutritious food. These changes in polar sea ice are a result of climate change. But this isn't just affecting polar bears - climate change affects everyone.

Changes in Earth's climate are caused by how much of the Sun's energy is absorbed by the atmosphere. In fact, over the past 650, 000 years, our planet has gone through seven ice ages and warming periods. But during the past few hundred years, oil, gas, and coal have powered homes, cars, and factories. That increases Earth's temperature, which contributes to the planet's warming.

The Words:

2. scavenge for |ˈskævɪn(d)ʒ| -

6. contribute  |kənˈtrɪbjuːt| -

Например, в задании написано: "how teenagers relax after a busy day in Zetland".

🏃      It is hard to deny the importance of having a good rest. I have decided to do a project on how teenagers in Zetland relax after a busy day and found the results of the opinion polls to illustrate some of my ideas.

Nowadays more and more people in the world tend to stay healthy at any age. I am currently working on a project, which is aimed at finding out how people stay healthy in Zetland. I have found some data on the subject – the results of an opinion poll. As part of my project, I am going to analyze the statistics and present my findings.

It is well known that (topic) ...

Nowadays more and more people (action connected  with the topic)

Over the last few decades there has been a significant increase in the number of people who (do sth connected with the topic)

(Topic) plays an important role in our life

Undoubtedly, all people (action connected with the topic)

Nowadays it is impossible to imagine ... without  ...

As we can see from the table, 38% of the respondents prefer doing a hobby after a busy day, while eating tasty food is the least popular way of spending teenagers' free time with only 6% of teenagers doing it. Also, adolescents can spend time with their friends, sleep and walk in the open air to have a rest after a tiring day.

Клише:     - the main features of this table/graph/pie chart ....

                     - one can see from the poll that...

                     - the most popular .... the least popular ...

                     - if we look at the graph/table/pie chart, we can see ...

                     - looking at the main features ...

                      - what stands out from the table/ graph/ pie chart ...

                      - another  striking feature is ...

Looking at the figures in the table, we can see that spending time with their friends (noted by 31% of the respondents) is almost twice as popular as sleeping, which stands at 15%. Another interesting feature of the poll is is that walking in the open air (noted by 10% of the respondents) is only 4% higher than eating tasty food, which is  the least favoured by teenagers in Zetland.

 - in comparison / in contrast, ...

  - on the other hand, ...

   - However, .../ Likewise, ...

    - not as ... as

    - more popular ... than

    - while / whereas/ although/but

Although we see that there are several ways to relax for teenagers in Zetland, there is a problem connected with having a rest. Sometimes it is difficult to switch off from your studies and work, and instead of relaxing you spend time thinking about what else you have to do later. I believe that the best solution to this problem would be going out as fresh air and change of scenery can help to forget about things that keep bothering you at home.

 - the main problem with ... is ...

  - the main problem faced by...is ...

  - general solutions centre around

 - one effective solution to deal with ... is ...

 - a solution that can prove successful is ...

I would like to conclude by saying that relaxing is of primary importance for every person as it helps one to have a calmer and clearer mind which aids memory, positive thinking and concentration.

To conclude, .../ To sum up, / Summarising , ...

 Overall, ...

Task I Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1,5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1,5 minutes to read it.

The Words

You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

With the rise in recent technology we seem to be rapidly losing the art of conversation. Talking on the phone used to be the means of communication for most people, but over the last 20 years texting or instant messaging has developed into one of the most popular ways of keeping in touch with friends and family.

Recent studies have shown that people are more likely to text than actually talk. Texting is great for quick short messages and meaningless banter. But it is very difficult to have  a deep and meaningful text conversation. Firstly, you cannot hear the intonation when someone is texting you. Secondly, texting lacks eye contact and body language, which are crucial facets of face-to-face communication. So, whatever is happening in your world, put that mobile phone down and talk to someone before you forget how.

The New Words:

1. banter |ˈbæntə|   -

Ice hockey has a long history. It  started on frozen lakes and rivers of Canadian winters in the 19th century. Now the games are played at high-tech arenas before 20,000 fans and are shown on TV. Though the rules and equipment have changed through the sport's 128-year history, the spirit of the game remains the same. Hockey has always been  a sport of speed and grace mixed with a certain amount of violence.

That combination has proven irresistible to fans for over a century. A crowd of 5,000 reportedly watched the first ever Stanley Cup competition in 1893. During the 2002/2003 season, attendance at national Hockey League games topped 20 million. The history of hockey holds more than just changing rules and regulations. A host of colourful characters, interesting traditions, and strange events mark hockey's timeline.

Time management is very important for students. When you are in college, you will be taking several classes at a time. Within each class, you'll have assignments and tests with different due dates. It can become really difficult if you are not good at time management. We recommend to write down all your deadlines ahead of time on a calendar, or even on a sheet of paper. This way, you can schedule study time and time to work on assignments according to what is due first.

A weekly checklist can also help to better manage your time when you are in college. Here's how it can work. At the start of each week, write down the assignments and projects that are upcoming for that week. You may even use different colours for different subjects. By looking at the checklist, you will make sure that no item is forgotten or overlooked.

The New Words:

1. within -  брит.

There is nothing fancy or expensive about happiness.  On the  contrary, happiness is simple and slow. It means choosing peace and quiet over excitement. It is wearing your old pyjamas and watching a movie on the day before Christmas. It is sitting in your window watching the weather while sipping your favourite tea on a rainy day. It is looking into the bonfire surrounded by your friends and family while your bread is slowly baking.

Happiness is always about appreciating the simple pleasures in life and thus it can be achieved on a really low budget. You cannot buy the right atmosphere or a sense of togetherness. It's all about time, interest and engagement in the people around you. Thus, happiness is an atmosphere which is not improved by spending more money on it, but rather, in some ways, the opposite. After all, the best things in life are absolutely free.

The life of Indians is centered in the family. Extended families often live together, with two or more adult generations, or brothers, sharing a house. In much of the countryside, neighboring houses share a wall, so from the street one sees a continuous wall pierced by doorways.

The village is thus a settlement area, or a set of settlement areas, surrounded by unbroken fields, with farms frequently made up of separated plots. A large village will have a primary school, and a small shop or two.

Task 2. Study the advertisement.

Destroy vs. destruct

Destruct is a mostly unnecessary variant of the verb destroy. Derived in the 17th century by backformation from destruction (destroy‘s corresponding noun), destruct had mostly faded from the language by the mid-1900s, when it was revived in rocketry and in the phrases self-destruct and auto-destruct. Outside these uses, destruct can usually give way to destroy.

Examples

In rocket science, to destruct means to destroy (a craft) intentionally after launch, usually due to defective performance—for example:

There was no obvious reason to send the destruct signal, since the rotation of the Earth would carry the missile out over the Pacific. [The Space Review]

The fashion industry is considered to be one of the fastest-growing industries today, yet it has faced some significant challenges throughout its history. It's not a secret that fashion industry takes its negative toll on the environment. Clothes production cannot cope with limited water consumption, and its carbon footprint increases daily. People buy tons of cheap garments which end up in landfills in less than a month. The situation might get worse if consumers don't change their habits in the coming years. There are some healthy fashion trends that may help to make fashion sustainable. Consumers are choosing brands that do not hurt animals and the planet in the process. The younger generation chooses second-hand shopping giving clothes another life. And brands promote recycling to save on raw material and natural resources.

The Words:

The first human carrying flight technology was the hot air balloon. While unmanned balloons have been around in some form for thousands of years, the first flight with people on board was in 1782.

The large balloon on top is called an "envelope". It holds hot air created by a heat source known as a burner. The burner creates an open flame by burning a mix of propane and air. Hot air balloons are capable of floating because the hot air inside the envelope has a lower density than the colder air outside. The top of the balloon usually has a vent which allows the pilot to control the speed of ascent or descent. Passengers typically stand in a basket beneath the envelope.  While most envelopes have a standard balloon shape, others are designed to look like animals, cartoon characters and other fun objects.

Ice hockey has a long history. It started on frozen lakes and rivers of Canadian winters in the 19th century. Now the games are played at high-tech arenas before 20, 000 fans and are shown on TV. Though the rules and equipment have changed through the sport's 128-year history, the spirit of the game remains the same. Hockey has always been the sport of speed and grace mixed with a certain amount of violence.

That combination has proven irresistible to fans for over a century. A crowd of 5, 000 reportedly watched the first ever Stanley Cup competition in 1893. During the 2002/2003 season, attendance at national Hockey League games topped 20 million. The history of hockey holds more than just changing rules and regulations. A host of colourful characters, interesting traditions, and strange events mark hockey's timeline

Chameleons don’t change colour to match the background. They change colour as a result of different emotional states. Chameleons change colour when they beat another chameleon in a fight. They change colour when a member of the opposite sex steps into view and they sometimes change colour due to fluctuations in either light or temperature.
A chameleon’s skin contains several layers of specialised cells. Altering the balance between these layers causes the skin to reflect different kinds of light, making chameleons a kind of walking colour-wheel. It’s odd how persistent the belief that they change colour to match the background is. The myth first appears in the work of a minor Greek writer of entertaining stories and potted biographies. Aristotle, far more influential and writing a century earlier, had already, quite correctly, linked the colour-change to fear. But it’s come back with a vengeance since and to this day is perhaps the only thing most people think they ‘know’ about chameleons.

The New Words

5. potted - сокращённый, адаптированный

People have always told stories and legends to explain natural, but mysterious, occurrences such as the Northern Lights. The Vikings believed the Northern Lights were caused by the shining weapons of warriors. The Alaskan people thought the lights were the souls of salmon, deer and other animals. The Indians told the stories of giants living in the North and they thought the lights were their torches.

The Northern Lights are actually caused by electrons from solar winds. They are attracted to the poles by the magnetic fields found there. They mix with gases in the atmosphere, which causes the gases to glow.  The Northern Lights are most visible in the north. They are typically green, purple, red or blue.

Text I

Task 1. Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1,5 minutes to read this text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1,5 minutes to read it.

Formal messages, or valentines, appeared in the 1500s, and by the late1700s commercially printed cards were being used. The first commercial valentines in the United States were printed in the mid-1800s. Valentines commonly depict Cupid, the Roman god of love, along with hearts, traditionally the seat of emotion. Because it was thought that the avian mating season begins in mid-February, birds also became a symbol of the day. Traditional gifts include candy and flowersparticularly red roses, a symbol of beauty and love.

The day is popular in the United States as well as in BritainCanada, and Australia, and it is also celebrated in other countries, including ArgentinaFranceMexico, and South Korea. In the Philippines it is the most common wedding anniversary, and mass weddings of hundreds of couples are not uncommon on that date. The holiday has expanded to expressions of affection among relatives and friends. Many schoolchildren exchange valentines with one another on this day.Topical vocabulary:

1. valentines |ˈvæləntæɪn| -  «

Text II

Early Valentine’s Day cards, however, were not necessarily limited to couples. Indeed, some historians suggest that valentines come from the German tradition of friendship cards. Freundschaftskarten, as they are called, were traded during New Year’s Day, birthdays, and other anniversaries. This tradition had a long history itself, dating back to ancient Egypt and China, where friends exchanged gifts for the new year. Sometime in the 18th century, Europeans and Americans began exchanging friendship cards on Valentine’s Day. The practice increased in the mid-19th century, especially in England, where the introduction of the penny post made sending valentines more affordable. Meanwhile, printing technology improved and expanded the market. Consumers in Europe and the U.S. could choose from a wide selection of valentines, including those designed by the popular English illustrator Kate Greenaway and engravings by the printers Thomas W. Strong and Robert H. Elton. Esther Howland’s popular handmade collages were assembled in Massachusetts by her female employees.
The exchange of valentines continued into the 20th century. Examples in the collection of the New York Public Library and in other institutions often bear the message “To my Valentine”. They also reveal a variety of senders and receivers. Some cards suggest a message between lovers; other cards show a note from a grandmother, a greeting addressed to an uncle, or a friendly correspondence between old chums. Classroom exchanges were also documented in the United States about this time, with students trading homemade cards. By mid-century, boxed punch-out cards were readily available, thus cementing an American tradition. Meanwhile, manufacturers such as Hallmark began selling inexpensive cards with innovative animation, three-dimensional effects, and custom-sized envelopes. Their affordability helped popularize the custom of exchanging cards for anniversaries and holidays, and Valentine’s Day cards soon became the biggest seller after Christmas.
In 2020, according to a survey by the National Retail Federation, Americans planned to spend $1.3 billion on valentines.
Yes, Valentine’s Day cards are big business, but at their heart is a long-standing playful tradition between couples, friends, family members, and classmates to express their affection. So why not embrace the classroom exchange and let your kids get that Star Wars pack with the glow sticks while you’re at it?

Earthquake in Turkey

A Devastating Earthquake in Turkey

Task: Read and answer the questions:

1) When and where did a 7.8 - magnitude earthquake occur?

2)  How many people died due to the quake?

3) Why is the earthquake considered a humanitarian disaster?

4) Where was the quake's epicentre located?

5) What is the popular name of the Circum-Pacific Belt?

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit south-central Turkey and northwestern Syria on Monday morning, leaving a rising death toll, already numbering in the thousands, in its wake. The earthquake was the area’s strongest since 1939, and a series of powerful aftershocks—some registering as high as 7.5-magnitude—only compounded the humanitarian disaster. The quake’s epicenter was located near the Turkey-Syrian border, where millions of displaced Syrian refugees live.

Earth’s major earthquakes occur mainly in belts coinciding with the margins of tectonic plates. This has long been apparent from early catalogs of felt earthquakes and is even more readily discernible in modern seismicity maps, which show instrumentally determined epicentres. The most important earthquake belt is the Circum-Pacific Belt, which affects many populated coastal regions around the Pacific Ocean—for example, those of New ZealandNew GuineaJapan, the Aleutian IslandsAlaska, and the western coasts of North and South America. It is estimated that 80 percent of the energy presently released in earthquakes comes from those whose epicentres are in this belt. The seismic activity is by no means uniform throughout the belt, and there are a number of branches at various points. Because at many places the Circum-Pacific Belt is associated with volcanic activity, it has been popularly dubbed the “Pacific Ring of Fire.”

With a long history of pioneering higher education, Europe is home to many of the world's oldest and most prestigious universities - and many of the most exciting and attractive student cities.

European countries, and their universities, are of course all very different - in terms of language, lifestyle and living costs. However, under the Bologna Process, European universities are working to standardize degree systems. For EU students, choosing to study in europe outside their home country should be relatively straightforward, with tuition fees charged at local rates and no visa requirements. First, compare top universities around the world by studying their profiles. After you've done the research, you've talked it over with your nearest and dearest, you're pretty confident that you're going to get the grades you need and you've chosen your ideal university or grad school, there's just one small obstacle standing in your way: to actually get into the university of your choice.

Spending your golden years in a place with lots of trees and other vegetation can be visually pleasing - and it also might be good for your heart, according to a new study. University of Miami researchers crunched the numbers to determine that nearly 250.000 Medicare recipients living in the greenest parts  of Miami-Dade County were 25 percent less likely to have a heart attack than those in the least green neighborhoods. While other studies say the health benefits of nearby green space can include lowered risk of diabetes,  high blood pressure and high cholesterol, the researchers say this is the first  one to focus on heart diseases at the block level. If the results are confirmed by other studies, that could guide city planners to focus more on neighborhood parks and tree-planting near homes instead of the overall percentage of green space. The researchers measured the greenness of Miami-Dade's 36.000 census blocks using satellite imagery. Greenary typically absorbs visible light and hard surfaces reflect it.

The raw food diet, often called raw foodism or raw veganism, is composed of mostly or completely raw and unprocessed foods. The diet allows several alternative preparation methods, such as juicing, blending, dehydrating and soaking. Similar to veganism, the raw food diet is usually plant-based, being made up mostly of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. While most raw food diets are completely plant-based, some people also consume raw eggs and dairy. Less commonly, raw fish and meat may be included as well. Additionally, taking supplements is typically discouraged on the raw food diet. Proponents often claim that the diet will give you all the nutrients you need. Supporters also believe that cooking foods is harmful to human health because it destroys the natural enzymes in foods, reduces their nutrient content and reduces the "life force" that they believe to exist in all raw or "living" foods. People follow the raw food diet for the benefits they believe it has, including weight loss, improved vitality, increased energy, improvement to chronic diseases, improved overall health and a reduced impact on the environment.

The company asked nearly 24.000 people across the UK to rate their hometown, taking into account how safe they felt, the quality of local services and sense of community spirit. The London borough of Islington also performed badly, being rated the eleventh worst area in the UK. But this year's survey comes as a boost for Londoners who last year saw nine of the city 's boroughs feature in the UK's ten most unhappiest places to live. Among the improvements are Hounslow and Harrow, which have both moved up the ratings.
