"Do", "go" or "play"?

Use "play" with any competitive game that you can play, "go" with activities that can be done alone, and "do" with groups of related activities.

Decide between "do", "go" or "play". Sometimes the verb needs to be conjugated or put in the infinitive or gerund form.

Thanksgiving Day in America (День Благодарения в Америке)

Итак, что нам известно о Дне Благодарения? 

День Благодарения (Thanksgiving Day) отмечается в США с 1863 года в четвёртый четверг ноября. В 2013 году эта дата выпадает на 28 ноября. 

 Сама идея празднования осени и окончания сбора урожая восходит к глубочайшей древности, но у американцев эти дни связаны ещё и непосредственнос историей освоения новых земель. 

26 декабря 1620г. после двухмесячного плавания к пустынному берегу Америки причалил корабль "Mayflower" ("Майский цветок").

Пассажирами была группа англичан-пилигримов, спасавшихся от религиозного преследования на своей родине. Они пустились в столь опасное путешествие в надежде основать в Новом Свете колонию, где они смогли бы, наконец, обрести вожделенную свободу. Берег, на  который высадились англичане, позже они назвали Новой Англией, в честь своей покинутой родины. 

Первый год на новом месте оказался очень суровым.Вскоре ударили морозы, и люди стали терпеть голод и лишения. Половина пилигримов тяжело заболела и погибла в ту зиму. А весной оставшиеся в живых завязали дружбу с индейцами, которые научили их выращивать кукурузу и тыкву, ловить диких индюшек, отличать съедобные растения от ядовитых, находить родники с питьевой водой, охотничьи тропы и рыбные места.

Свой первый урожай колонисты собрали ранней осенью. В честь него они устроили большой праздник, на который пригласили своих друзей-индейцев. Пиршество затянулось на несколько дней. Все лакомились жареной индюшкой, тыквой и кукурузой. Второе лето на новом месте не было таким удачным, а третье и вовсе выдалось засушливым. Тогда губернатор пилигримов Уильяим Брэдфорд назначил день поста и молитв, и вскоре после того пошёл дождь. Чтобы отметить это чудесное событие, и был установлен День Благодарения. 

                               Долгое время праздник был неофициальным в Новой Англии.Только в 1777г. Континентальный конгресс объявил об официальном национальном праздновании Дня Благодарения в декабре. Джорж Вашингтон в 1789 г. провозгласил этот праздник национальным событием и по запросу Конгресса определил дату - 26 ноября, четверг.

В его толковании это был День Благодарения американцев своей конституции. Но полностью национальным праздником День Благодарения стал в 1863 году, во время Гражданской войны, когда президент Авраам Линкольн объявил, что отныне четвёртый четверг ноября будет отмечаться как День Благодарения. Окончательный перенос праздника на последний четверг ноября произошёл в 1939 г. благодаря указу Франклина Рузвельта, которым президент дал гражданам своей страны два лишних дня отдыха. 

День Благодарения - семейный праздник. родные и друзьясъезжаются со всей страны, чтобы посидеть за общим столом, уставленным традиционным угощением. Это непременно индюшка, сладкий картофель ямс, клюквенный соус, тыквенный пирог и подливка. 

   

Церемония помилования индейки

Если же кто-то в этот день остался без обеда, то его пригласят благотворительные организации.Сам президент в этот день помогает кормить бедных, бездомных и стариков , накладывая им на тарелки щедрые порции.  

    Ещё одна традиция праздника - церемония помилования индюшки, которая проводится в Белом доме с 1947 г. В соответствии с этой традицией хотя бы одна индейка должна избежать участи оказаться на праздничном столе. 

    В канун Дня Благодарения президенту США демонстрируют двух наиболее достойных представителей семейства индюшачьих - собственно "национальную индюшку" и её заместителя - "вице-индюшку". Первая будет торжественно помилована, а вторая - украсит праздничный обед в Белом доме.

    В ходе церемонии помилования президент зачитывает указ и осторожно гладит встревоженную птицу. Позже её отправляют в зоопарк, где она живёт до старости. 

    Существует традиция написания песен ко Дню Благодарения. На сам День  Благодарения принято устраивать парады, в большинстве своём костюмированные, в одеждах  ХVII века и костюмах индейцев.

Что такое "политкорректность"?

Выражение "политически корректный" возникло в 70-х годах двадцатого века и изначально обозначало "инклюзивный, без дискриминации". Оно применялось в отношении к языку и общению , которое не вызывает чувство дискриминации (унизительного отношения) отдельного человека или группы людей. 

Однако, сегодня многие стремятся наоборот, к эксклюзивности, к доминированию своей личности или демографической группы, к которой они принадлежат. Поэтому Соединённые Штаты Америки, являющиеся плавильным котлом(или салатной миской, или пиццей) самых разнообразных групп людей, всерьёз обеспокоились возрождением политкорректности и решили начать именно с языка.

Если объединить все регламенты и правила по соблюдению политкорректности, то выработаются 8 основных рекомендаций по соблюдению норм общения в нашем поликультурном мире. (Продолжение читайте на специальной страничке "Политкорректность".)

Если вы хотите научиться читать по-английски, вам необходимо знать правила чтения гласных букв. В английском всего 6 гласных:

Aa, Ee, Ii, Oo, Uu, Yy. 

Гласные буквы читаются по-разному, в зависимости от типа слога. 

Итак, гласная Aa. Она читается так, как называется, если стоит в открытом ударном слоге. Открытым считается слог, который оканчивается на немую гласную e. (Её мы не читаем).

Пример: cake (кэйк)

                lake (лэйк) 

Если Aa стоит во 2-м - закрытом типе слога, то есть, когда ударный слог оканчивается на согласную, или когда в двусложном слове за ударной гласной следуют 2 согласных буквы, Aa читается , как в слове cat (кэт).Пример: cat (кэт), bat (бэт), rat (рэт).

Гласная Ii читается, как называется в алфавите, если на конце слога (слова)стоит немая буква e:

Пример:  bike (байк). like (лайк), Mike (Майк).

В закрытом типе слога Ii читается, как в слове pig (пиг). 

Пример: pig, big, six, sit, it, hit.

Гласная Ee читается долгим звуком (и) , если стоит в открытом типе слога.

Например:  

he(хи), me (ми), bee (би). Гласная Ee читается долгим звуком "и" в буквосочетаниях: ee, ea (и): bee, green, read, please.

Во 2-м типе слога Ee читается как в слове ten (тен), только согласную перед ней нельзя произносить мягко!

Читаем гласную Oo в открытом слоге:   no (ноу), go (гоу), nose (ноуз).

Читаем Oo в закрытом слоге , как в слове dog (дог).

Прочитайте: dog, frog, log, not, hot, pot, lot, dot, blog, got. Помните, что звук  "о" в английском языке звучит не так, как в русском, а намного короче и похож на "а".

We say by to say how we travel: 
We went to Paris by plane.

I usually go to work by bike / by car / by underground / by bus. 


BUT: 

We say on foot.

Important note: 

We cannot use by if you say my car / the train / a taxi.

Then use IN for taxis and cars.

Then use ON for bike / public transport. 

AT     

1. We say that someone is at an event: 

2. We say at with buildings when we say where the event (film, concert ) takes place:

at a party - at a pop concert - at a conference - at a meeting 

Example: Where were you yesterday? - At the cinema.

                 Tom is at a party. The meeting took place at the headquarters.

3. We say at someone's house.

4. We say at for a place which is a part of our journey: 

We were at Bill's house last Thursday. We stopped at a very nice village. Does the train stop at Nashville?
