The History of London

I'd like to tell you about London. The Romans came to England in AD 43 and built the town of Londinium on the River Thames. Londinium soon grew bigger and bigger. Ships came there from all over Europe and the Romans built roads from Londinium to other parts of Britain. By the year 400, there were 50,000 people in the city.
Soon after 400 the Romans left, and we do not know much about London between 400 and 1000. In 1066 William the Conqueror came to England from Normandy in France. William became King of England and lived in London. But William was afraid of the people of London, so he built a big building for himself - the White Tower. Now it is part of the tower of London and many tourists visit it to see the Crown Jewels - the Queen's gold and diamonds.
London continued to grow. By 1600 there were 200,000 people in the city and by 1830 the population was one and a half million people. The railways came and there were factories all over the city. This was the London that Dickens knew and wrote about - a city of very rich and very poor people.
At the start of the 20th century,four and a half million people lived in London. Today the population of Greater London is seven and a half million. 26 million tourists visit London every year and you can hear 300 different languages on London's streets!

Russian Primary Schools
I'd like to tell you about Russian primary schools. In Russia children begin to go to school at the age of 6 or 7. School starts at 8 o'clock in the morning. Children usually have 4 classes a day. They have Reading, Maths, Russian and Handicraft in their timetable. Primary school children often play outdoors after classes. Their teachers often take them to different museums, theatres and concerts. Classes are usually formal - children sit on chairs at their desks and follow a regular timetable.
In many primary schools children wear uniforms but in some primary schools they don't. As for our schoolchildren, they don't wear uniforms but they stick to the dress code. Children must wear white blouses and shirts and black or grey skirts, dresses and trousers. When children are 10 or 11 years they leave their primary school. So in Russia children spend 4 years in primary school.

I'd like to tell you about the Tower of London. The Tower of London is a historic castle. It is located on the north bank of River Thames in central London.
It was founded at the end of 1066. The White Tower, which gives the castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078. The castle was a royal residence, then it was used as a prison.
The Tower is a complex of several buildings.
The Tower has been a palace, an armoury, a treasury, the home to the Crown Jewels of England. Today the Tower of London is a tourist attraction (it is a museum). It is protected as a World Heritage Site. That's all I wanted to say. Thank you for listening.

London is the capital of Great Britain, which stands on the river Thames.
The West End is the centre of London. There are a lot of theatres, cinemas, galleries and museums there.
The City of London is the oldest part of London. There are many banks, offices and firms in this part of London. It's the financial centre of the UK.
Tourists from all the countries of the world go shopping to Oxford Street, which is in the West End of London. They can buy all the things they want in its famous shops.

People can hear the sound of Big Ben every hour in London.

Air Pollution
I'd like to tell you about air pollution (I'd like to give a talk on air pollution). I can say that the air in big cities is rather dirty nowadays. As a result, it's difficult to breathe. People suffer from lack of oxygen. It happens so because of people's wrong activities.
Firstly, people don't care about their environment and build plants and factories which pollute the air. Factories burn their waste and throw away harmful chemicals. Secondly, people cut down trees and destroy the natural balance between plants, animals, people and their environment. Besides, people use a lot of cars which work on petrol and poison the atmosphere.
To solve this problem people should take some steps. I think governments of all countries should make laws to ban building plants and factories without good filters. I'm sure every person should follow a set of rules to take care of the environment. One of them should be using electric cars. Besides, people shoudn't use harmful chemicals daily. Moreover, they should stop cutting down rainforests. We also need to install (set up) filters at nuclear power stations, at factories and plants and also in cars and buses. There are some popular animals that are kept as pets in town. They are hamsters, cats, dogs, budgies, tortoises, fish, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas. Dogs and cats are kept in the country. Some people are fond of keeping exotic pets.They are crocodiles, iguanas, lizards, monkeys and what not.
However, if you keep a pet, you may face some problems. First, pets can do harm to the furniture. Second, some dogs can be very aggressive and attack people.
People keep pets because they give us pleasure, pets can become good companions for elderly or sick people. As for me, I have two pets. They are a cat and a hamster. The cat's name is Murzik. He is very nice and funny. The hamster's name is Bob. He is a nice brown thing. I like both of them very much. That's all I wanted to say. Thank you for listening.
